Venezuela's Chavez Sworn in for 3rd Term

President Hugo Chavez was sworn in for a new six-year term Wednesday, beginning what he has called a stronger push to remake Venezuela as a socialist state.

Chavez took the oath of office at the National Assembly five weeks after a sweeping re-election victory he has said will allow him to pursue more radical changes, including plans to nationalize "strategic" power and telecommunications companies

Raising his right hand, Chavez said: "Fatherland. Socialism or death _ I swear it."

I just don't understand why this kind of thing still makes the news. Wait a minute, yes I do... It's entertainment! I have to say that Chavez is definitely the most fiery and charismatic figure in politics today, despite the idiocy of most of the stuff he says. And therefore, he'll be a prominent figure in the news for many years to come.

But for me, this stuff just doesn't matter any more. The guy can be relied on for shock value, that's obvious now. If the media really wants to inform their audience about Venezuela, they need to stop focusing on what the guy says and start focusing on what is actually happening there. Because I doubt many people here in the US have any idea.

People in the U.S.A. never know what's going on! Yes, there is violence in Venezuela and we can blame Chavez. They have a strange leader, like everywhere in the world!

But as much violence than perhaps, Iraq? Hmmmmmm.... how many countries has Venezuela invaded in the last 20 years???? Not so many.
